How to use ServeIt

Getting started

Make a free account, pick a name, and your site is live at name.serveit.site right away. Free accounts get 1 site, 100 MB of space and files up to 5 MB.

From My sites every site has three ways in: the page builder, Edit files, and Settings.

The page builder

Open Page builder on a site. Pick a starting design, or bring in the page you already have.

  • Drag blocks from the right side onto the page.
  • Click anything to change it; the paint brush tab styles it.
  • Double click a picture to upload your own.
  • The phone and tablet buttons up top show how it looks on each.
  • + Page adds pages; Page settings sets each page's address, title and Google description.
  • Save and publish (or Ctrl+S) puts it live.

The builder writes index.html and one file per page. The old versions stay in history.

Edit files

Upload by dragging files onto the drop box, or drop a whole .zip and it unpacks into the folder. Big files go up in pieces, so plan limits are all that count.

  • Click any html, css, js or text file to open the code editor, with color coding, search (Ctrl+F) and auto-closing tags.
  • Ctrl+S saves without leaving the page. The preview beside it reloads to show the change.
  • History keeps the last 20 versions of every file you change, replace or delete. One click puts an old one back.

Addresses and pages

  • index.html is your home page.
  • about.html also works as /about.
  • A folder with its own index.html works as /folder/.
  • Make a 404.html and people who hit a missing page see yours.

Only static files are hosted: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, pictures, audio, video, fonts and documents. Server code like PHP is never run.

Backups and settings

Backup downloads your whole site as a zip any time. In Settings you can switch a site off for a while, name it, give it a description, and list it on Explore. Deleting a site frees its name for anyone.

Plans, add-ons and OHS Social

Free is free for good. Plans add sites, space and bigger files, billed monthly through PayPal. Cancel in PayPal any time. Add-ons are one payment and stay on your account.

An OHS Social license puts the whole OHS Social script on your own domain. Each license runs one domain and you can move it from the licenses page.
